The Creole Dancer

Icarus

'creativity takes courage' - Henri Matisse
A while ago now, my mum asked me if there were any art exhibitions I wanted to go and see. Fan-girling and screaming, I answered Henri Matisse, The Cut-Outs. So off we went to the Tate Modern. Matisse's work, for the last 17 years of his life, was cutting out different shapes from coloured paper and using them to create some really beautiful and unique pieces. A lot of his best art, he originally did on his walls at home. The exhibition was split up into 13 rooms, and each was more intriguing than the last, and it really showed how Matisse's art had developed through the years. There was a whole circus themed section, and I think this is where the bold colours really started to show. My favourite piece out of this section is called the Creole Dancer, and I think it's gorgeous with the silhouette filled in and the movement that is captured. The exhibition was so fantastic I got the book at the little gift shop ( I swear it weighs 2 tonnes ).

ben giles

I've seen so many of these on tumblr and pinterest and flickr and the person behind the work is Ben Giles. His artwork is incredible, and so so unique. I love how he uses faded, old black and white photographs and uses such bright and bold colours for a contrast. Also, may I just say his tumblr is flawless ( that's me, focusing on the social media side of it all ), His work has given me so much inspiration, and for my A-levels ( majorly planning ahead ), I'm hoping to do photography and art as two of them, and I'm already getting myself excited. Have a look at his tumblr if you want to be amazed.

life updates

25.9.14

Hello, remember me?! I'm that girl who blogged for a while and then disappeared? All in good reason. I've never done an update sort of post on here, so  I feel like it's a good time to, here goes.
  • I went back to school recently, and all of the extra homework and stress is all a bit blah in my face.
  • I've been a bit behind on blogging ( and everything ) lately, but I have a lot of posts planned so y'all better be excited ;)
  • I appear to have discovered a new love for shopping and looking online for winter coats, and it's not even properly cold yet. I can't wait to wear them with oversized jumpers, fluffy boots, and tartan scarves. I'm just super excited for autumn to properly start.
  • The need of a way to get up straight away in the morning is greatly needed.
  • Tired. Tired tired tired tired tired.
  • Please can I just be her.
  • Time to go, have a cuppa, and watch some Sherlock.

secret cinema

Ok, close your eyes, and picture the set of back to the future: overflowing with diners, 50s dresses, red lipstick and lightning bolts. Honestly, when I walked past 'Lou's cafe' and onto the grass before the town hall into the secret cinema I tried really hard to stop my jaw from hitting the ground in shock/amazement/happiness. If you don't know what secret cinema is, it's a event where they choose a film or a book or something and make the set ( yes, MAKE THE SET ). I'm not describing it well. When I went, there was the frock shop, with actors stressing about what they should wear to the dance, Biff was driving around in his car shouting at people, the under the sea dance was actually there - it was incredible. Well, for a back to the future obsessive ( obSESSIVE ). I would HUGELY recommend going, especially as on the website, they don't give you the address ( that's the secret paha ), they lead you to the place. It's basically right opposite the olympic park, so I think it would be pretty easy to find anyway.

When normal people come off holiday they sleep and relax, but me, I write rambly posts with too many pictures.
Anyway, me, my family and a few friends went on a three week holiday to Portugal ( two weeks ) and then Mallorca ( one week ). We stayed in lovely villas for both trips, and in Portugal we were right next to the sea and a crazy golf course which was cooool. In Mallorca we literally visited everywhere, all the historic sites, LOADS of markets, galleries etc etc. It was amazing wondering around all the cobbled streets and lovely lovely independent stores. They also had this health food shop with ( get this ) healthy chocolate. In between my legs falling off from all the walking we went swimming at this local pool with mushroom pad things ( I'm not describing it very well but the pool really was loads of fun ).
I've visited Portugal loads of times and it's one of my favourite places to go, and I love Mallorca equally.

bowler hats

2.9.14

I am completely loving bowler hats at the moment. I wish I was cool enough to wear one. It's such a versatile item. They smarten up and add a little to every outfit. I like. With winter coming up, I'd love to get my hands on one - a nice alternative to a beanie. I love how they're being worn with a girly outfit. Floral dresses, a pink duo, a bowler hat can spin it in a totally different direction. They're sophisticated but edgy. Come to meeeeee.
